OSU holds spring game in front of 61,000

Bri'onte Dunn and Warren Ball ran for touchdowns to lead the Gray past the Scarlet 17-7 Saturday in Ohio State's annual spring game before a crowd of 61,058 at sunny Ohio Stadium.  Many of the Buckeyes' big names didn't play.

Quarterback Braxton Miller, Ohio State's All-Big Ten quarterback, sat out spring workouts after surgery on his (right) throwing shoulder. Wide receiver Evan Spencer (ankle) and safety Vonn Bell (knee) also missed the game.

The Buckeyes lose four starters on defense and six on offense from a 12-2 team that won a school-record 24 games in a row before losing the Big Ten championship game to Michigan State 34-24 and the Orange Bowl to Clemson 40-35.

Harvick wins at Darlington

Kevin Harvick has capped his biggest weekend at Darlington Raceway with his first Southern 500 victory. He started from the pole and passed Dale Earnhardt Jr. two laps from the end of the longest race in the track's 65-year NASCAR history. Harvick led 239 of the 374 laps, seven more than planned, and became the first two-time winner in the first eight races of the season.  The race was extended by two tries at a green-white-checkered finish.

Hendrick Motorsports had the second and third-place finishers as Earnhardt finished just ahead of Jimmie Johnson. Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle round out the top five.

Latos return delayed for Reds

Reds starter Mat Latos had an MRI on his sore pitching forearm Saturday, leaving him unsure of the next step in his recovery from elbow and knee problems.  The right-hander had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow after last season. He tore cartilage in his left knee while throwing and had surgery on Feb. 14, the day the Reds opened spring training.

Latos had hoped to be ready to rejoin the rotation later this month. He suffered a setback this week when he was scratched from a minor league rehab start because of the sore forearm. He said the elbow and the knee felt good, and he's unsure why the forearm has become a problem.

Slumping Reds lose to Rays

Alex Cobb went seven innings on Saturday, extending Tampa Bay's run of solid starting pitching, and James Loney homered for a 1-0 victory over the slumping Cincinnati Reds.  The Rays came into the interleague series with a 1-8 mark against the Reds. They've taken the first two games with shutdown pitching and just enough offense.
