Thanksgiving Day sales cut into Black Friday

Cyber Monday kicks off nationwide

CHICAGO, Illinois -- Thanksgiving Day is no longer just about turkey: It’s eating away at Black Friday sales numbers.

According to data released Saturday by the research firm ShopperTrak.... U.S. shoppers spent $9.74 billion on Black Friday,  a drop of 13.2 % compared with last year.  However, combined spending on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, rose 2.3 % to $12.3 billion.  Today is known as Cyber Monday, the day when holiday shoppers traditionally take to the internet super-highway.  This year, it appears Cyber Monday is going mobile.  Reports indicate that more consumers using their smartphones and other mobile devices to buy gifts this holiday season.  A recent survey by the Nielsen Co. of 1,000 Americans showed that  46% plan on shopping online on Cyber Monday, which is up from 30% a year ago.   
The Nielsen data indicated that the usage of mobile devices is growing, with 37% of consumers planning to use iPads, Android devices and other tablets, and 27% who expect  to complete their shopping over their mobile phones.
