Coal production down in Buckeye State last year

ODNR notes 5.7 percent decrease between 2011 and 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The amount of coal being produced in Ohio is down, according to the latest data from the state.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources published its annual report on the state’s mineral industries on Tuesday. The data shows that Ohio pulled 26.3 million tons of coal from the earth in 2012, a decrease of 5.7 percent from the year before.
Coal production was on the decline as regulations and economics challenged the industry domestically; however, the market kept the fossil fuel’s value high.
On average, just less than 3,000 Ohioans were employed in the coal extraction industry in 2012. Mines were closed last year in Meigs, Jefferson and Coshocton counties.
Nearly 19 percent more natural gas was pumped in 2012 than in 2011, the report shows. Oil production was up 2.5 percent. In April, the state shared production from fracked horizontal oil and gas wells, which are responsible for the total increases, but the numbers released Tuesday include the thousands of conventional, smaller-scale vertical wells.
