Dangerous, flesh-eating drug makes appearance in Ohio

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- Two local Sheriffs have joined in a campaign against a new synthetic drug that is so dangerous that some officials have promised immunity to people if they'll just turn it in.
Both Guernsey County Sheriff Mike McCauley and Noble County Sheriff Stephen S. Hannum have agreed to dispose of the heroin-like synthetic drug known as "krokodil" and not file charges against individuals who surrender the drug at their offices.  Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly is another official who has offered immunity, after he saw "krokodil" show up in the town that is home to Ohio University.  Kelly said the drug appeared there after a woman bought what she thought was heroin in Columbus. The drug can cause brain damage and side effects that range from scaly, greenish skin to melting away of skin and muscle at the injection site.  The Columbus Dispatch says the reports from Athens and the Columbus area are the first of krokodil showing up in Ohio.
The drug is made by mixing codeine tablets with household chemicals and gasoline, paint thinner or lighter fluid.  Individuals wanting to dispose of "krokodil" locally can call the Guernsey County Sheriff's Office at 439-4455, or the Noble County Sheriff's Office at 732-5631.
