Committee approves raises for Cambridge City Council, Treasurer

Written by

Update in Alley Vacation process approved as well

Both the Finance and Legislative committees of Cambridge City Council met in regular session last night.
Finance approved requests from code enforcement, the clerk of council, the parks department and the city auditor for year end transfers to help balance the books.  Among the auditor's request was a $60,000 transfer from the general fund to police salaries.  Code Enforcement officer Kim Conrath requested a transfer of $27,000 from the general fund to demolition for a number of house demolition projects in the city.  Last night's actions by Finance, for the most part, depleted the City's unappropriated general fund for the year.
Finance also approved a proposal regarding a salary increase for Council members and the City Treasurer.  The proposal would raise salaries, from $5,750 to $7,250, to help those on council to maintain a minimum for their PERS retirement accounts.  Council had not given themselves a raise since 2008.  Finance approved a raise for the City Treasurer over the next four years of 0%, 0%, 2% and 2% annually as well.  The Committee also gave approval for Fire Chief Jeff Deeks to pursue a Firehouse Subs Foundation Grant of $20,000 for new turn-out equipment for firefighters.
The Legislative Committee met as well and approved an update of the current alley vacation process that was prepared by City Law Director Bill Ferguson.  Ferguson said both the new procedure and form will provide more guidance for applicants attempting to vacate an alley within the city.  Alley Vacations will continue be considered by  City Council on a case by case basis.
These and other issues will be brought before the next full meeting of Cambridge City Council on Monday, December 9th.
