Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

Cubs make first postseason in 7 years

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Indians have shifted their front office, promoting general manager Chris Antonetti to president of baseball operations and naming Mike Chernoff their new general manager.
With president Mark Shapiro leaving Cleveland after 24 seasons to take the same position with the Toronto Blue Jays, the Indians have moved Antonetti, who has been the GM over the past five seasons, into a role "overseeing the direction of all our baseball decision-making."
Chernoff has worked as Antonetti's assistant since 2010 and had drawn interest from other teams. Derek Falvey will preplace Chernoff. He has been the club's director of baseball operations.
The team said the moves will not impact business operations with owner Paul Dolan assuming Shapiro's responsibilities. Dolan said the club's front-office structure is similar to one adopted recently by several other teams.
The Indians finished 81-80 and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

UNDATED (AP) - Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis will miss 4-5 weeks with a lower body injury.
The 36-year old was limited to 16 games last season because of blood clots. He was off to a solid start last fall with seven goals in 16 games before the clotting issue was discovered.
Dupuis was one of the most durable members of the Penguins before tearing the ACL in his right knee in December 2013.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - The NFL has asked the Browns why Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden was inactive for Sunday's game against San Diego after being listed as probable on the team's injury report.
Haden sat out with a broken right ring finger, an injury he sustained a week earlier against Oakland. Haden also hurt his ribs but was able to practice on a limited basis all week and was down as probable - a 75 percent chance of playing - on the week's final injury report.
However, after testing his hand during a pregame workout, Haden decided not to play. Browns coach Mike Pettine said Monday that "we left it up to Joe, and he made the decision that he didn't want to go."
A league spokesman says it's customary to check with teams when these instances occur. The Browns are required to submit a written explanation for Haden's absence.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - Officials say Bowling Green State University football coach Dino Babers and an athletic trainer saved a woman from a burning car last weekend as the team was coming home from a game.

The Blade newspaper reports that Babers and Chelsea Lowe were aboard the first of four team buses traveling back from Buffalo to the northwest Ohio school on Interstate 90. They saw a car swerve in front of the bus, hit the center divider and catch fire.

The pair pulled the injured driver from the flaming wreck. She was identified as 25-year-old Amber Nettles.

Babers says he fulfilled a promise he made to a Good Samaritan who helped him when he was stranded on the road during a snowstorm nearly 30 years ago.
