Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

Matz Leads Mets over Reds

NEW YORK (AP) - In an astonishing debut, Steven Matz became the only major league pitcher to drive in four runs in his first career game while leading the New York Mets to a 7-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

Pitching about 50 miles from home with a huge cheering section on hand, Matz got three hits in rejuvenating an anemic offense and helping the Mets to a three-game sweep. He was awfully impressive on the mound, too, working into the eighth inning after giving up a home run to his first batter.

The team's latest prized pitching prospect, Matz had to wait 3 1/2 extra hours to make his much-anticipated debut because the teams needed 13 innings to first complete Saturday's game that was suspended by rain. Picking up in the seventh inning, New York won 2-1 with help from two miscues by Reds infielders.

Tribe Lays Egg on O's

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Tillman pitched seven innings of four-hit ball to win his fourth straight decision, and the Baltimore Orioles breezed past the Cleveland Indians 8-0 Sunday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.

In the afternoon game, Ubaldo Jimenez, Jimmy Paredes and Manny Machado led Baltimore to a 4-0 victory. Jimenez allowed four hits in eight innings, and Paredes and Machado homered.

The sweep boosted the Orioles to the top of the AL East by percentage points over Tampa Bay. Baltimore (41-34) has won 15 of 19 to move a season-high seven games above .500.

It was the first time since Sept. 6, 1974, that the Orioles registered shutouts in both games of a doubleheader, according to STATS. The opposition that day was also Cleveland.

Five-Way Tie at PGA Pro Tourney

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Kyle Voska, Ben Polland, Austin Peters, Shawn Warren and Shane Zywiec each shot 4-under 68 on Sunday at The Philadelphia Cricket Club's rain-softened Militia Hill Course to share the first-round lead in the PGA Professional National Championship.

Voska, the 2008 PGA assistant champion from The Links Golf Course in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, ran in birdie putts of 25, 15, 10 and 30. Polland, the PGA assistant professional at Deepdale in Manhasset, New York, eagled the par-5 third hole after hitting a 5-iron from 203 yards to 5 feet.

Peters, a PGA head professional at Wood Ranch in Simi Valley, California, had six birdies and a pair of bogeys. Warren, a PGA assistant professional at Falmouth Country Club in Falmouth, Maine, earned a share of the lead with a birdie his last hole. Zywiec, a PGA teaching professional at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln, Nebraska, birdied four of his final five holes.

Eighteen of the 20 players under par in the 312-player field opened at Militia Hill. Left-hander Rob Moss of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and Zack King of Antioch, California, led the way on the Wissahickon Course - the site of the final two rounds - at 1-under 69.

The low 20 scorers will earn spots in August in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.
