Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

L.A. completes sweep of stumbling Cincinnati

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel will not play in Cleveland's last two exhibition games because of lingering soreness in his right elbow.

Manziel has been shut down from throwing, and Browns coach Mike Pettine said the second-year QB will miss not only this Saturday's game at Tampa Bay but Cleveland's preseason finale at Chicago on Sept. 3.

It's a setback for Manziel, who has shown improvement following a rough rookie season, which was followed by a seven-week stay in rehab.

Pettine had planned to play Manziel in the first half against the Buccaneers starting defense.

Manziel has dealt with elbow soreness since high school. The Browns are hoping rest will alleviate his issues. Pettine said Manziel realizes sitting out is "smart" so he doesn't make the condition worse.

UNDATED (AP) -- Gerrit Cole snapped the longest winless drought of his career, Pedro Alvarez homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates nipped the Miami Marlins 2-1. Cole is 15-7.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli tripled and scored in the second inning for the Pirates, who took three out of four in the series. Alvarez made it 2-0 in the fourth on his 21st homer - the 18th of the solo variety.

Cole allowed one run and five hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking none. Cole hadn't gotten the win in any of his previous five starts, and the Pirates are 45-22 all-time when he takes the mound.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - The New York Jets have signed quarterback Josh Johnson, adding another veteran to the mix.

The Jets announced the move Thursday night, a few hours after bringing Johnson in for a workout. To make room on the roster, New York waived undrafted rookie quarterback Jake Heaps.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is the starting quarterback with Geno Smith sidelined several more weeks with a broken jaw. Fourth-round draft pick Bryce Petty is currently Fitzpatrick's backup. The Jets also signed veteran Matt Flynn last week, but he has yet to fully practice with a sore hamstring.

Johnson was a fifth-round pick of Tampa Bay in 2008, and also has been with Cleveland and had two stints each with Cincinnati and San Francisco. The Bengals released him Tuesday after A.J. McCarron won the backup job.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Chris Jent will coach the Bakersfield Jam, the Phoenix Suns' affiliate in the NBA Development League.

The Suns and Jam announced the move Thursday. Jent replaced Nate Bjorkgren, now the Suns' assistant coach/player development coordinator.

The 45-year-old Jent spent the 2013-14 season and the start of last season as an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings. The former Ohio State swingman spent two seasons in the NBA with Houston and New York, helping the Rockets win the 1994 title.

Jent began his NBA coaching career as an assistant with Philadelphia in 2003-04 and spent the next season with Orlando, going 5-13 as interim head coach in the final 18 games. He was Cleveland's director of player development in 2006-09 and served as an assistant in 2009-11, then spent two years as an assistant coach at Ohio State.
