Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

Vacancies Abound on Panels Statewide

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's inspector general has received a complaint that the state's Unemployment Compensation Advisory Council hasn't met in at least four years because members weren't appointed.
The Columbus Dispatch reports other state boards and commissions also are missing members or not meeting as outlined by law.
Information provided to lawmakers indicated 327 appointed positions open on more than 130 state panels last month. At least three other panels have no members.
The complaint about the unemployment compensation panel was filed by a former lawyer with the Bureau of Workers' Compensation.
A spokesman for the inspector general told the newspaper he couldn't talk about a complaint's status.
Gov. John Kasich's (KAY'-siks) spokesman, Rob Nichols, says it's sometimes hard to find qualified appointees, and occasionally a panel is intentionally left vacant.

Southeast Ohio Police Chief Charged

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) - A southeast Ohio village police chief suspected of helping a woman avoid arrest has pleaded not guilty on 12 counts, including obstructing justice.
The Athens Messenger reports Glouster Chief Lucas Mace entered the same plea Wednesday on six misdemeanor counts of dereliction of duty, single felony counts of theft in office and having criminal tools, and another misdemeanor, failing to aid law enforcement.
The Athens County prosecutor says Mace knew the woman was wanted by authorities and should have arrested her. He says Mace instead took the woman to dinner, let her to stay at his home and gave authorities misleading information.
Mace's attorney, Joe Nemec, is seeking a gag order in court, arguing that it will be difficult to find jurors because of media coverage of the case.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge alleging he stole $230,000 in Social Security survivor benefits intended for his mother, who died 33 years ago.
The Dayton Daily News reports 71-year-old Frank Pospisil of Kettering entered his plea Wednesday to theft of government property.
Prosecutors alleged he got monthly Social Security checks meant for his mother from August 1981 until March of this year.
He'll be sentenced later. The possible punishments range from probation to prison and a $250,000 fine, as well as potential restitution.
A message was left Thursday for one of his attorneys. The other said he had no comment, except to question the newsworthiness of Pospisil's case.
The newspaper says the prosecutor handling the case was unavailable to comment.
