Gilbert and James on Solid Ground

CLEVELAND (AP) - Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert says his relationship with superstar LeBron James is "very solid." When James signed with Miami four years ago, Gilbert publicly attacked him in a scathing letter. The two had a frosty relationship until meeting this summer to talk through their differences in the days leading up to James announcing he was re-signing with Cleveland.

The Cavs get their season underway against the Knicks tonight at 7 on ESPN Cambridge 107.9 FM, AM 1270.

LBJ a Dad Again

CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James and his wife have welcomed a new baby girl into their family. Cavaliers officials say the girl's name is Zhuri Nova. She was born last week. James already has two sons, LeBron Jr. and Bryce Maximus. James says his family is thrilled with new addition, and that "it's a lot different" having a girl around the house.

Bengals Face Challenge

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Bengals' defense finally got its act together after three rough weeks, holding down Baltimore just enough to pull out a pivotal win. The challenge is to keep it going without Cincinnati's best defensive player. Pro Bowl linebacker Vontaze Burfict had surgery on his left knee yesterday and will miss at least the next two games. The Bengals host Jacksonville on Sunday, then play the Browns at Paul Brown Stadium on Thursday night.

Playoffs? Buckeyes Face Long Road

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Buckeyes aren't exactly huge fans of the College Football Playoff rankings. Still, they aren't surprised that they have their work cut out for them to make it into the college sport's first playoff. The Buckeyes are ranked 13th in the coaches and The Associated Press media polls, but 16th on the initial list of the top 25 teams determined by the playoff selection committee.

Jags to Get Joeckel Back

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - The Jacksonville Jaguars could have left tackle Luke Joeckel back on Sunday at Cincinnati. Joeckel left last week's loss to Miami with a concussion in the first quarter. He has since passed part of the NFL's concussion protocol, and will participate in non-contact drills today.

Sens Stop Jackets

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ottawa Senators beat Columbus 5-2 last night in the Blue Jackets' first game since star goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was sidelined with a broken finger. David Savard and Cam Atkinson scored for injury-riddled Columbus, which has lost three in a row. Center Artem Anisimov went down after taking a shoulder in the second period that sent his helmet into the air and left him face down on the ice.

Love Leaves Practice

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) - Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star forward Kevin Love has taken a shot to his ribs during practice. Love sat out the rest of practice yesterday and was not on the court when members of the media were allowed in. The Cavs open the season tomorrow night at home against the New York Knicks.

Bobrovsky Out a Week, Maybe More

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky is expected to miss one to two weeks with a broken finger. Bobrovsky suffered a fractured finger when he was struck by a puck in practice on Monday. He's 4-4-0 with a 2.81 goals-against average and .908 save percentage in eight games this season.

Smith Leaves Bucks

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - In college football, backup tailback Rod Smith has left Number 13 Ohio State to deal with some personal issues. Head coach Urban Meyer confirmed the move yesterday in an email. He says the Buckeyes will continue to support the fifth-year senior. Smith has had a troubled past in his college career.
