Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

Anti-Fracking Group to Hold Conference

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A concerned citizens' group in a northeast Ohio region where earthquakes have been tied to fracking says it won't take the word of state regulators that new permitting guidelines adequately address public safety.

Youngstown-based Frackfree Mahoning Valley plans a news conference Wednesday to discuss persisting concerns.

A state geologist's finding released last week for the first time linked earthquakes in the Utica Shale to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, a technique used to access oil and gas deposits. The state's review called the link "probable."

The finding led Ohio to issue a moratorium on fracking within three miles of the seismic activity's epicenter and to issue new permit conditions viewed as among the nation's strictest.

The anti-fracking group says a Youngstown State University geologist has identified 12 earthquakes near fracking activity.

Tressel a Finalist for U of Akron Presidency

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is among three finalists in the University of Akron's search for a new president.

Tressel has been an administrator there for two years. He took the job after being forced out at Ohio State following a scandal that led to NCAA sanctions.

A campus email Tuesday from Akron trustees says the finalists include provosts from two other schools - Scott Scarborough of the University of Toledo and Ronald Nykiel (neye-KEEL') of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Trustees say each finalist will spend one day next week interviewing with advisory groups. Whoever is chosen will replace President Luis Proenza (proh-EN'-zah), who is leaving his position in June.

Tressel also applied to be president at Youngstown State University, where he previously coached.

Over 250 Mumps Cases Now Reported

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Public health officials say a mumps outbreak in central Ohio has topped 250 cases. That's more than half of the nation's 438 reported cases last year.

The total as of Monday was 253 cases of the contagious viral illness, with 153 of those linked to Ohio State University. That includes 109 students and 17 staff members.

Local health agencies say those infected range in age from 9 months to 80 years old. The cases span from early January to last week.

Mumps often starts with fever, fatigue and body aches. Those infected are urged to stay home, cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing, and frequently wash their hands.

Officials say local cases have included inflammation of the testicles and ovaries, deafness and hospitalizations.

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio Attorney General's Office says a volunteer football coach is expected to plead no contest to charges that arose from the investigation into the rape of a girl by two high school football players.

Authorities say the house of defendant Matt Belardine was the scene of an underage drinking party that preceded the 2012 rape by the Steubenville (STOO'-behn-vihl) players.

Attorney general spokesman Dan Tierney says Belardine is expected to plead no contest Tuesday in Jefferson County court to one count of making a false statement and one count of enabling underage drinking.

Tierney says counts of obstructing official business and contributing to the delinquency of a child are expected to be dismissed.

A message was left with Belardine's attorney seeking comment.
