Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

TORONTO (AP) - R.A. Dickey pitched a four-hitter to win his seventh straight decision, Josh Donaldson had three hits and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians 5-1 on Wednesday night.

Toronto won for the fifth time in six games, maintaining a 1 1/2-game lead over the New York Yankees, who beat Boston 13-8.

Dickey (10-10) threw 92 pitches, including 68 strikes, in his second complete game of the season and 15th of his career. He's unbeaten in 10 starts, dating to a July 9 road loss against the White Sox.

Dickey set down 14 straight before Jason Kipnis hit a one-out single in the ninth. Francisco Lindor ended it by grounding into a double play.

Donaldson went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, raising his ML-leading total to 111.

Trevor Bauer (10-11) gave up five runs and six hits in 1 1/3 innings.

CHICAGO (AP) - Joey Votto hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning that was set up by third baseman Kris Bryant's two-out error, lifting the Cincinnati Reds over the Chicago Cubs 7-4 Wednesday.

Bryant hit a two-run homer in the eighth that made it 4-all. The rookie has 22 home runs and 84 RBIs this season.

Cubs closer Hector Rondon (5-3) retired the first two batters in the ninth. Jason Bourgeois, who homered earlier, followed with a single.

Jay Bruce then hit a hard grounder that went through Bryant's legs for an error, and Votto connected for his 27th home run.

J.J. Hoover (7-0) got the win despite allowing Bryant's homer. Aroldis Chapman closed for his 27th save.

Tommy La Stella and Anthony Rizzo hit solo home runs for the Cubs.

PITTSBURGH -- Jonathan Lucroy drove in three runs and extended his hitting streak to 10 games as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates for the fifth straight time, 9-4.

The fourth-place Brewers have won seven of their last eight against Pittsburgh, which leads the NL wild-card race.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - Former San Francisco 49ers owner and Youngstown native Edward DeBartolo Jr. is a finalist for the 2016 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a contributor.

DeBartolo was nominated Wednesday by the nine-member contributors committee. Elections will be held on Feb. 6, the night before the Super Bowl. DeBartolo, 68, must receive 80 percent of the ballots to be elected to the Hall of Fame.

Under DeBartolo's ownership, the 49ers won five Super Bowls in the 1980s and `90s. They won at least 10 games in 17 seasons and appeared in 10 conference title games.

When notified he is a finalist, DeBartolo said: "I'm truly humbled. My football life is going through my mind right now."
