John Charlton: Sports Director/News Reporter
John has covered sports
since his high school days at Chambersburg Area Senior High School when
he worked as a reporter for the Public Opinion newspaper covering high
school and college basketball, softball and baseball, and summer league
American Legion and Adult League baseball.
Following High School, John attended Ohio University where he picked up
a Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree and a lot more experience
writing for the OU Sports Information Office and later as a reporter for
the Athens Messenger.
After graduating from OU, John landed in Cambridge as the Sports Editor
for the Daily Jeffersonian Newspaper. After several years cover the
local sports scene, he moved to the news department and was involved in
the newspaper’s switch from its Saturday afternoon paper to a new and
improved Sunday morning paper.
In 1997, John went to work at Muskingum College as the Assistant
Director of Public Relations where he was the editor of the alumni
magazine. During his first year at Muskingum College, NASA announced
that John Glenn, an alumnus of the College, would be returning to space.
This gave John the opportunity to work with international, national,
regional and local media that converged on New Concord to cover the
story.
Following a stint at the Ohio Department of Insurance, John took a job
as the public relations director at what is now Zane State College. He
was an integral part of changing the name of the college from Muskingum
Area Technical College to Zane State College and branding and marketing
the new name.
John returned to his roots in sports reporting in December of 2006 when
he accepted a position with AVC Communications. He enjoys working back
in the community that he lives in and enjoys following the local sports
scene.
John and his wife Kim have three children. Isabel, born in 1997, is a
successful swimmer on the YMCA swim team. Garth, born in 1999, is an
avid baseball fan who loves to play the game and cheer on his favorite
team the Indians. Brandon, born in 1982, works for the City of Cambridge
and recently helped bring a beautiful bouncing boy into the world.
During his free time, John enjoys playing golf, reading, and cheering on
the Pittsburgh Steelers. Here We Go Steelers, Here We Go!!!
