Awards handed out during annual meeting

ANTRIM, Ohio -- The Antrim Volunteer Fire Department conducted their annual end of the year meeting Monday night.   During the gathering, they reviewed 2013, looked forward into the new year, and distributed the annual fire contracts to the attending township trustees.

Chief Donald Warnock reported that the department currently has a balance of just over $27,000 in their General Fund, not including the separate EMS fund, and other CD's and savings accounts.
On display last night, was the department's newest piece of equipment, a pneumatic extrication device.   The powerful unit if often a critical piece of vehicle rescue equipment.  Also on display was a portable emergency power generator.   The unit,  purchased at no cost to the department, was provided by the Guernsey Co EMA, and stored at the Antrim firehouse.   The primary function of the generator is to provide back up power to the Guernsey Co Sheriff Office's radio antenna, located behind Antrim's firehouse.  Beyond that function the unit is available around the county at the discretion of the EMA.
Warnock notes that, thanks to the hard work of the department personnel, and through the support of the community, the Antrim Fire Dept maintains full operations on a debt free status.
Antrim Fire Department, with 17 active members,  has one of the area's largest coverage areas.   This includes much of the northeast portion of Guernsey Co, including part of Salt Fork State Park, and portions of US 22 and Interstate 70.
In 2013, the fire department answered 63 calls, while there were 116  EMS calls answered.  Officials say this is about average, but does not include the numerous calls that are canceled while en route, covering the Guernsey Co Fair, area high school football games, or well being calls.
During Monday's  meeting the Antrim Fire Fighter of the Year Award went to Don West.  The Chief's Award was presented to the entire department.   Chief Warnock spent some time going around the room pointing out how each and every member routinely goes above-and-beyond, to benefit the department.
Antrim's Special Recognition Award went to the department's treasurer, Mary Workman.  This award is given to someone who is not a member of the department, but works, behind the scenes to help the department in some way.
