2013 Relay For Life event to be held at Meadowbrook High SchoolWritten by Shana Fair, Community Contributer
Relay For Life Logistics Chair, Ralph Ray, and volunteer Chuck Fair, met with Skinner (Larry Wickham), Groundskeeper at Rolling Hills Schools, to discuss details of setting up the Relay for Life event which will be held Friday, June 21 through Saturday, June 22, on the Meadowbrook High School campus. The event will be located in the parking lot in front of the high school.
Ray and Skinner discussed the best locations for setting up the Survivor and Registration tents as well as locations for the generators which will light the event through the night. Relay participants traditionally have volunteers walking every hour of the event to symbolize that fighting cancer is a 24 hour a day effort for cancer patients and caregivers.
The center of the area will hold the giant colon and the breast torso as well as a bounce house for children. The entertainment tent will also be located near the center of the parking lot. Relay teams will place their tents in a large arc around the outer edge of the parking lot.
Ray stated that the new location has several advantages over the old location on the football field. Handicapped parking is available near the Survivors Tent. Relay teams can drive to their tent locations and drop off their gear instead of hiking into the football field. Restrooms are near at hand. The high school building is quickly accessible and will provide shelter in case of a severe weather warning.
Food and drink will be sold at the concession counter located inside the high school near the gym. Additional refreshments can be purchased from Relay team throughout the Relay area. The silent auction will be held in the high school building.
