Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

Tribe Wash Out Sox

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Trevor Bauer struck out seven, working solidly into the seventh inning, and the Cleveland Indians connected for three home runs Monday in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Bauer gave up four hits, including a home run to Tyler Flowers, in 6 1-3 innings. He fanned Melky Cabrera and Adam LaRoche three times apiece but walked his first batter of the spring, Adam Eaton.

Bradley Zimmer hit a two-run homer to the right field bullpen off Hector Noesi in the fourth. The homer was the first of the spring for Zimmer, an outfielder who was Cleveland's first-round pick - 21st overall - in last June's draft.

Veteran catcher Brett Hayes followed Zimmer's long ball with his third of the spring, a long drive over the bullpen in left.

Noesi went 5 1-3 innings and gave up five hits, walking two and striking out five.

Jerry Sands also homered for the Indians, off Zach Duke.

Padres Double Reds

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Matt Kemp hit the first of San Diego's three homers off Anthony DeSclafani - a new addition to Cincinnati's rotation - and the Padres pulled away to a 6-3 victory over the Reds on Monday.

Kemp hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning for his fourth homer of the spring.

Clint Barmes added a solo shot, and Yangervis Solarte had a three-run homer during the fifth inning. DeSclafani gave up six runs and seven hits in six innings. The Reds got him from Miami in an offseason trade for Mat Latos and are counting on him to fill one of three openings in the rotation.

San Diego right-hander Ian Kennedy pitched six scoreless innings. Kennedy will start the Padres' home opener against the San Francisco Giants.

Reds Release Relief Prospect

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Left-hander Paul Maholm has been released from a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

Maholm agreed to the deal Jan. 28 and had a 2.19 ERA in five spring-training games, allowing three runs, seven hits and two walks in 12 1-3 innings with five strikeouts.

Cincinnati, which announced the decision Monday, originally envisioned Maholm competing for a rotation spot after the Reds traded Mat Latos and Alfredo Simon, but the Reds told Maholm in mid-March he was under consideration for a bullpen role.

Under baseball's collective bargaining agreement, the Reds had until Tuesday to give Maholm written notice he would be on the opening-day roster, pay a $100,000 retention bonus or release him. If added to the 40-man roster, he would have received a one-year contract calling for a $1.5 million salary in the major leagues and the chance to earn $500,000 in performance bonuses based on starts: $100,000 each for 10 and each additional five through 30.

Maholm was 1-5 with a 4.84 ERA in eight starts and 22 relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year. He injured his right knee covering first base against the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 1 and missed the rest of the season.

State average for gallon of regular $2.38 on Monday

Change would impact more than 13,000 workers, 16,000 patients
