Joan Sue Miller, age 87 of Cambridge, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. She was born on May 1, 1926 in Gallipolis, daughter of the late Paul R. Lyne and Faye (Boyd) Lyne.

Mrs. Miller was a 1943 graduate of Cambridge High School and then received her Bachelors of Education from Denison University. Following graduation, Joan taught at Washington Court House Schools for one year. Joan and Bud were married on June 17, 1948 at the Ninth Street Methodist Church. They moved to Cleveland following their marriage for Bud to attend medical school at Western Reserve. They lived and worked as house parents at Beechbrook Children’s Home. Paul was born in Cleveland in February 1952 and the growing family moved to Toledo for Bud’s medical internship. In the summer of 1953, they moved to Akron for a medical residency and Sally was born in August of 1953. They returned to Cambridge in July 1954 for Bud to begin his medical practice. Brett was born in January 1956. Having returned to their childhood home of Cambridge, Joan and Bud raised their three children in Cambridge and Joan became an active member of the community.

Joan was a member of the Ninth Street United Methodist Church where she served on numerous committees including kitchen responsibilities. She was president of the Ladies Aux. at Guernsey Memorial Hospital; a Cambridge school board member from 1969-1973; a member of the Cambridge Country Club and Ladies Golf Association; she was also a long time member of the Eastern Star and played in several Bridge groups. Joan was well known in the community for her cooking and baking, especially her cheesecakes. She was an avid golfer (including several Ladies Club Championships), and an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Ohio State University sports, and local high school sports.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Faye Lyne; her daughter Sara Jo "Sally" Ling; and brother-in-law Hugo Brown.

She was the loving wife of Dr. Howard "Bud" Miller for 65 years; loving Mother of Paul Howard (Karen Hoberg) Miller of Rancho Murieta, CA, Sally Miller Ling, and Brett Lyne Miller of Columbus; and doting Grandmother of grandchildren, Andrew Brett (Laura) Miller, Matthew Dennis Ling, James Howard Ling, Kathryn Elizabeth Ling and Alexander Nikolai Hoberg. She also leaves beloved sisters-in-law, Joy Miller Brown and Libby Miller Bennett; brother-in-law Bob Bennett; and nieces and nephews, Diane "Dee Dee" Carlson, Julie Devries, Janet Carroll, Keith Brown and Todd Brown.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Ninth Street United Methodist Church at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Karen Rawlins officiating.

No calling hours will be observed.
