Richard Edward (Dick) Saunders, age 88 died on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 in Indianapolis, IN following a long illness. Mr. Saunders was a resident of Gibson Station Ohio from 1990 until 2005.
Mr. Saunders was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 26, 1925 to Clifford and Lillian (Hoffman) Saunders. Following service in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II, he returned to Cleveland and worked at the Cleveland Builders Supply Company for over 40 years, retiring as Director of Customer Service. Mr. Saunders was active in many church activities including the Holy Name Society; Men’s Sodality, Holy Name High School Dad’s Club and Catholic War Veterans. He was a board member of the Cleveland Home and Flower Show for over 30 years.
Mr. Saunders and his wife Martina retired to Guernsey County, where they restored the historic Gibson Station railroad station. He was a lector at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Lore City. The couple relocated to Indianapolis to be closer to family in their final years.
Mr. Saunders is survived by his daughters Faith (Robert) Linden of Indianapolis; Brenda (Steven) Sprague of Alexandria, VA and Monica (Richard) Rozzell of Columbus, OH. He had 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Saunders of Lakewood, OH and his brother Donald (Nancy) Saunders of Tampa, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife Martina (Brinda) Saunders; his parents and a brother Robert (Peggy) Saunders. Calling hours will be from 11:00 to 12:00 on Monday November 4, 2013 with Funeral services to follow at 12:00 at Christ Our Light Parish Church 714 Gomber Avenue; Cambridge. Burial in Gibson Station Cemetery. Arrangements by Bundy Law Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to Holy Name High School; 6000 Queens Highway; Parma Heights, OH 44130.
