Martin P. Goodfriend, age 69 of Cambridge, formerly of Barefoot Bay, Florida passed away on Monday, November 18, 2018 at his home. He was born on October 22, 1944 in Cambridge, Ohio a son of the late Patricia A.(Patterson) & Martin M. Goodfriend
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Tammy Sunnafrank Goodfriend; son Kyle (Anne) Goodfriend; grandchild Adam Kyle; brothers and sisters -in-law, Mark (Melinda) Baker, Randy (Karla) Baker, Michael (Marilyn) Sunnafrank and the late June (Dale) Dickson; nieces & nephews, Niki and Cody Baker, Dawn (Piero) Capecci, Daren(Susan) Dickson, Michael Sunnafrank, Shawna (Alan) Winland, Erik, Matthew, Jet and Kara Baker, Eric and Sean Whitsell, Michael Nickell; numerous great nieces and nephews and a very special cousin, Gail (John) Sanger of Greeley,Colorado.
He received his Bachelors of Education at Ohio University where he played Varsity Soccer and his Masters in Education from Muskingum College. He served as the first Juvenile Law Enforcement Officer with the Cambridge Police Dept. where he established the first Boy Scout Explorer Post in Law Enforcement and served as the first host of the radio station (WILE) program CONTACT. He left the police dept in 1971 to work at GTE in the sales department in the Dover -New Philadelphia office. He returned to Cambridge in 1980 and purchased Buckeye Guard Service which he operated as President and CEO for 15 years. He returned to college during this period to obtain his degree in Education and taught in the Cambridge School System, both at Oakland Elementary and CJHS, until he retired in 2008. He was recognized as an Outstanding Teacher in 2000 by “ Who’s Who Among American Teachers”. He coached the Cambridge Bobcat Golf team for 5 years until he retired.
He was always an advocate for the children of Cambridge. He started coaching Little League Baseball at the age of 20 and over the years coached 2 generations of ball players. He coached soccer at the YMCA when soccer first started in Cambridge. He was President of Biddy League Football for 5 years and was instrumental in establishing the Biddy League football field, lights, scoreboard, and the refreshment building and storage for equipment.
He was a Master Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Cambridge.
After retiring in 2008, he and his wife moved to Barefoot Bay Florida, until recently. He played softball in the Senior Softball League. Golfing was his passion and he served as the Tournament Director for the Barefoot Bay Men’s golf league until he became ill in January of 2013.
A memorial service will be held November 23, 2013 at Faith United Methodist Church in Cambridge at 2 pm. Rev. Brad Call will officiate the service.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Martin Goodfriend Scholarship Fund at Cambridge City Schools, 6111 Fairdale Drive, Cambridge, OH 43725.
No calling hours will be observed
A memorial service will be held November 23, 2013 at Faith United Methodist Church in Cambridge at 2 pm. Rev. Brad Call will officiate the service.
