Michael Alan Denniston, age 62 of Cambridge, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 18, 1951 in Anderson, Indiana, the son of Thelma (Brouse) Denniston of Frankfort, Indiana and the late Rev. George Denniston.
Mr. Denniston faithfully attended First Church of the Nazarene where he served as worship leader, small group leader, Sunday school teacher, youth leader and choir director.
He graduated from Nappanee High School in 1969 in Nappanee, Indiana, and recieved his bachelor of arts degree at Anderson College in 1973. He came to Cambridge in 1975 and joined the family business with his wife’s parents, Wilford and Gloria Funk. He worked at Cambridge Office Supply, eventually becoming owner, until 2007. Since that time he was privileged to be employed at Advantage Bank in the Credit Administration Department.
He served as Cambridge High School Tennis Coach for the past 22 years. During this past season, he achieved his 200th career win and was named ECOL Coach of the Year for the fifth time. He led Bobcat tennis players to two OVAC overall championships and four state tournament appearances.
Michael is survived by his wife, Barbara E. (Funk) Denniston, whom he married on June 22, 1974; his mother, Thelma (Brouse) Denniston of Indiana; his mother-in-law, Gloria Funk of Cambridge; son, Tim (Jennifer) Denniston of Granger, Indiana; daughter, Sarah Denniston of Anderson, Indiana; one grandson, Wilford Michael “Will” Denniston; siblings, Steve (Barb) Denniston, Diane Denniston, Melanie Denniston, Joel (Kathy) Denniston, all of Indiana, many nieces and nephews and a closely knit extended family.
Mike gave his heart to the Lord at a young age, and his life reflected that commitment to glorify God in all he did. Singing gospel music was an ongoing passion, first with his parents and siblings, then with One Accord Trio and later with his wife and children. Visitors to his home were often gathered around the piano for a time of singing. The music has never stopped as many times his hospital room was filled with song, and because of his relationship with Jesus Christ, his songs of praise continue on today.
