Carl Edward Gardiner, 90, of Barnesville passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the Barnesville Health Care Center. He was born in Fairview, Ohio on October 7, 1923, son of the late Wilbur and Freda (Luyster) Gardiner. He married Viola May Eddy on January 2, 1946 in Barnesville. Carl is survived by four daughters, Carla (Carl) Bosley of Poplar Bluff, MO, Sharon (Chuck) Wolf of Barnesville, Judy (Jeff) Kerns of Marysville, OH, Melanie (Don) White of Winterset, OH, and grandson Tom Keadle, who resided with him. He is survived by four sisters, Mildred Van Fossen, Joann Lynn, Margaret Paglialunga, and Ruth Sudduth. He had 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Viola, a daughter, Bonnie Keadle, a brother, Bill Gardiner, and a sister, May Davidson.

Carl worked many years cutting mine props, and later retired from Cravat Coal Company. Carl loved music, and he was known for his guitar playing, singing, and songwriting. He also liked to lead the singing at the Church of Christ in Fairview, Ohio where he was a member since 1964. He also wrote several short stories.

Carl was a creative and inventive woodworker, designing tools to improve the efficiency of his work. He had an impressive ability to engineer things in his mind and create them, such as motorized wooden miniature Ferris wheels.

He visited the sick and the shut-in, and entertained them with his many stories, jokes, and songs. He enjoyed gardening, throwing horseshoes, fishing, and playing cards with his friends and family. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Carl’s family wishes to express sincere thanks to his caregiver Angie Grodell, and Dr. Souri for their excellent services as well as his grandson Tom for daily live-in care.
