William Adrian "Bill" High, 84, of Byesville passed away Sunday (April 27, 2014) at Genesis Healthcare.

William was born at home on Highland Ave., in Cambridge on May 26, 1929 and was the son of the late Luke Pharis and Clarissa Pearl Stewart High.

He was a 1946 graduate of Byesville High School, and a 1956 graduate of Muskingum College. He became a graduate of the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta GA, in 1960, while assigned to the 9518th Air Reserve HQ. He was ordained as a Methodist minister in 1961 by the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church.

He served at the end of WWII with the Army Air Force in the 582nd Air Service Group in the Canal Zone and the 36th Fighter Wing in Germany. He also served in the Korean Conflict with the 1701st Air Transport Wing as Sgt. Major. He stayed with the Air Force Reserve until July 1966 when he went with the Army and was assigned to the 616th Medical Clearing Co. in Vietnam. In 1967 he was assigned to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center as Chaplain until August 1969. He was assigned to the 463rd. Eng. Btn. at Wheeling, WV until he retired as a Major in May 1989.

Bill was a retired minister having served 40 years with the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. His appointments included Adamsville, Senecaville, Pleasant Grove, Waynesburg, Canal Fulton, Old Washington, Chandlersville/Claysville, Center, Kenmore Blvd. in Akron, Mt. Ephraim, Middlebourne, Lore City and Kipling. As a youth he had worked in the classified department of the Daily Jeffersonian, the Luna Theater and Western Union.

He was a member of Main Ave. United Methodist Church in Byesville. He served as President of Meals on Wheels of Guernsey County. He was a board member of Hospice of Guernsey, member of Rotary Club, American Legion Post #84, the Civil Air Patrol, Toast-Masters, and volunteered at the Golden Rule School.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie Ellen (Lancaster) High whom he married June 7, 1949; one son Warren Douglas (Janessa) High of Cambridge; three daughters, Bolivia (Lee Williams) High of Belpre, LaVonne (Rell Gene) Pickens of Fairview, and LaJoy (Richard) Crawford of Zanesville; two brothers, Ronald (Jean) High of Cambridge and Curtis (Carolyn) High of Edwardsville, IL; three sisters, Zora Conroy of Byesville, Gloria (Joe ) Dettra Grace of Marion and Junaita (Frank) Sayre of Senecaville; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville where services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Karen Rawlins officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Guernsey, P.O. Box 1165, Cambridge, Ohio 43725.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with military services by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
