New Concord ---- Wendell Wayne Litt, 88, of New Concord, Ohio passed away peacefully on Monday morning, June 9, 2014, at home on this farm. He was born May 30, 1926 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, the son of William H. and Grace (Myers) Litt.

Wendell was a 1944 graduate of Bellville High School, Bellville, Ohio where his high school vocational agriculture teacher, Dale Friday, inspired him to study agriculture at The Ohio State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science and Masters degree in Agriculture. During his college years he served as the manager of the Camp Ohio State 4-H camp and he served as a “sea-going cowboy” to deliver a boat load of horses and livestock to Poland after WWII. Upon graduation, he taught vocational agriculture at Savannah High School, Savannah, Ohio for one year until he was drafted into the Army to serve in Korea. Then, he began teaching vocational agriculture at New Concord High School (and John Glenn High School) in New Concord. After he left teaching, Wendell worked over 20 years in the OSU Cooperative Extension Service as a 4-H Agent in Muskingum, Tuscarawas and Guernsey counties and he retired as the Agricultural Extension Agent for Guernsey County.

In his retirement, Wendell enjoyed full-time beef cattle and sheep farming, history and grandchildren. He served as the Director of the Pioneer and Historical Society of Muskingum County and was active in the Century Farm program sponsored by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Wendell authored two books: one on the Century Farms of Muskingum County and another on Stories of Veterans from the East Muskingum area.

Wendell was a member of the New Concord United Methodist Church, where he had served as lay leader, MYF counselor and a member of various committees. Some of Wendell’s other many activities were as member and Master of the New Concord Grange, member of the New Concord Lions Club, founding member and first president of the National Trails Ruritan Club, president of the New Concord Elementary PTA, member of the New Concord Steam and Gas Club, member of the Parent’s Council at Muskingum College, 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge (where he served as Worthy Master) and a member of the Order of Eastern Stars.

Wendell is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Bernice Joan Finley Litt, whom he married on June 12, 1955; and by his son Gordon (Susan) Litt of Lancaster, Ohio and their children Guy, Wade, Conner and Hallie; and by his daughter, Susan (Ken) Ballantine of Glenford, Ohio and their children, Craig (Debbie), Abigail (Marcus) Pardon, and Hillary. He also is survived by his siblings: Eleanor Burwell of Westerville, Ohio, George (Susie) Litt of Carrolton, Ohio, Leroy Litt of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Ruth Ann (Clarence) Bunnell of Fredericktown, Ohio, in-laws Mildred Litt and Russell Lamb along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son (David Wendell Litt), his brothers (Ralph Litt and Raymond Litt) and his sister (Viola Lamb).
Visitation will be Friday, June 13, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Farus Funeral Home, 63 West Main Street, New Concord, with Masonic Services at 5:45 pm at the funeral home.
Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday June 14, at the New Concord United Methodist Church, 20 East High Street, New Concord, with Rev. Karen Graham and William Harris officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, New Concord. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: David W. Litt Scholarship Fund, Muskingum University, New Concord, Ohio; or Genesis Hospice, 713 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio; or United Methodist Church, New Concord, Ohio.
