CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- New statistics from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources show that 2014 has, so far, been a banner year for horizontal drilling in eastern Ohio.
According to the latest report from the ODNR's Division of Oil and Gas Management, Carroll County continues to lead the state in permits issued, at 398. Harrison County ranks second, with 221 permits, while Columbiana County comes in third, at 107.
In our area, Noble County leads the way with 102 permits, with Belmont County at 100 permits and Guernsey County at 96.
Ninety-one permits have been issued in Monroe County. Earlier this year, the ODNR reported that the highest-producing well in the state resides in Monroe County.
The ODNR has issued a total of 1,248 permits for drilling in the Utica Shale since December 2009. A total of 847 horizontal wells have been drilled since that time, with 396 wells currently in production.
