CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- The number of drilling permits issued in eastern Ohio continues to tick up, according to the latest data from the state.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources released updated well permitting data on Tuesday. The data shows that Carroll County continues to lead the state, with 404 permits. Harrison County comes in second with 232 permits, while Belmont County is third with 112.
In our area, Guernsey County leads the permit count with 109. That's an increase of 13 since the last report was issued on May 10. Noble County has remained steady at 102. Monroe County, which hosts the top-producing well in the state, has 92 permits.
The ODNR has issued a total of 1,272 permits for drilling in the Utica Shale since December 2009. A total of 865 Utica wells have been drilled since December 2009, with 401 wells currently in production.
