Monroe County well pad fire prompts lawmakers to open dialogue

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- Following a massive fire at a natural gas well pad in Monroe County, state and local lawmakers are looking for ways to prevent similar accidents and improve local response in the future.

State Rep. Jack Cera of Bellaire told media outlets Tuesday he has written a letter to the EPA, the Ohio Deptartment of Natural Resources, and the Department of Public Safety. Cera says one of his concerns is about the coordination of response that occurs when and if the local fire departments are to be used.

The Belmont County Commissioners say they are also making a concerted effort to learn more about the well pads in their jurisdiction as well. The Commissioners will hold monthly safety meetings with all the gas and oil companies that are actively drilling in Belmont County and monitor safety on a monthly basis from these meetings.

The Belmont County Emergency Planning Commission has also expressed interest in regular communication with the horizontal drilling industry.
