Motive sought in shooting at Ohio vets hospital

Written by

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Authorities are trying to determine what led to a shooting at a Veterans Affairs hospital that ended with a housekeeping employee shot in the ankle and a retired worker in custody.

Police say 61-year-old Paul Burnside was shot in the ankle Monday in a struggle over a gun with 59-year-old Neil Moore. Authorities say the revolver went off as the two fought over it in an employee break room.

Dayton police Chief Richard Biehl says Moore and Burnside apparently knew each other. But investigators haven't yet determined a motive.

The hospital says Moore worked in housekeeping for 27 years before retiring last October. Hospital officials say Burnside is a housekeeping aide who started at the hospital in 1998.

Authorities say three people witnessed the shooting. The FBI says a revolver was found later inside the suspect's vehicle.
