Lawmakers want gun law 'leasing' loophole closed

Written by

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Some Ohio lawmakers are trying to close a gun law loophole they say allows municipalities to get around a provision permitting concealed weapons in parks.

Legislators say some communities are leasing parkland at a minimal price to a private entity, then posting signs banning concealed handguns.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Thursday lawmakers removed an initial provision aimed at stopping such leasing actions after concerns arose it could allow guns in places such as children's science centers that already ban guns.

Rep. Joe Uecker, a Republican from Loveland in southwest Ohio and the bill sponsor, says lawmakers are exploring alternative wording to address the leasing issue.

The bill would also reduce from 12 hours to eight the training time to get a concealed weapons permit.
