Ohio tornado confirmed; rain spurs flooding threat

Written by

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (AP) - The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado with an estimated maximum wind speed of 145 mph struck near Cedarville in western Ohio.

A preliminary statement from the weather service says the Wednesday evening twister probably rated as an EF3 on the 0-to-5 EF scale.

No injuries were reported, but the tornado destroyed two houses and several other buildings as strong storms moved through the state. The Dayton Daily News reports fire crews rescued seven people from the basement of a house that was flattened near Cedarville. They were OK.

Flood watches remained in effect Thursday for parts of eastern and northern Ohio as communities recovered from several days of heavy rain and storms.
