Delay in Ohio school sanctions clears Senate panel

Written by

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - School districts and teachers would get a one-year reprieve from funding or job sanctions related to Ohio's new learning and teacher-evaluation standards under a package of sweeping education changes nearing a vote in the Ohio Senate.

The Senate Education Committee approved revisions Tuesday to a midterm budget proposal introduced by Republican Gov. John Kasich.

One change guarantees local control over the curriculum, textbooks and course materials used in Ohio classrooms. That proposal, still several steps from approval, addresses concerns from districts, parents and others as Ohio phases in multi-state Common Core learning standards.

Another education-related change creates academic standards review committees appointed by state leaders to review tests administered around Ohio in English, social studies, science and math. Another limits collection and dissemination of certain data about students.
