Ohio voting rights issue falls short on signatures

Written by

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Backers of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing certain voting rights in Ohio have failed to collect enough signatures to put it on this fall's ballot.

Supporters of the proposed "Ohio Voters Bill of Rights" say their goal now is to place it before voters in 2015. They are vowing to keep the issue on Ohioans' minds.

State Rep. Alicia Reece said at a Tuesday news conference that the campaign collected about 100,000 signatures in 90 days. It needed roughly 385,000 signatures.

Reece joined ministers and other volunteers to launch an effort aimed at generating needed support for the issue.

The Cincinnati Democrat said they will be opening a Columbus office and hosting a fall summit on voting rights. The initiative will coincide with the 50 anniversary of the Civil Rights Amendment.
