Attorney General Mike DeWine has helped start "Safe Neighborhoods" initiatives in five other Ohio cities. The program focuses on offenders with a history of gun violence who often are major contributors to violent crime in their communities. Authorities including religious and community leaders reach out to the offenders about the consequences of the crimes, while presenting alternatives and ways to work to prevent crime.
Hamilton Mayor Pat Moeller, Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser and other law enforcement and community officials were scheduled to outline the program for Hamilton on Thursday.
The initiative also is being tried in Akron, Ashtabula, Lima, Steubenville and Warren.
