Town of Pekin, Ind. expected to be hit hard by the closure

SALEM, Ind. -- An Indiana town is bracing for the closure of a factory operated by a New Concord, Ohio-based corporation.
The Penda Fabri-Form Corp. announced earlier this week that it will be closing its Pekin, Ind. factory effective Jan. 1. The Pekin factory, which has been in operation since 1953, was initially built to produce door liners for General Electrical refrigerators.
The Salem, Ind. Leader reports that 37 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closure.
Gary Nale, town manager for Pekin, said he was shocked by the news and that he had no notification from company officials. Nale said the economic impact will be felt not only by local business but also the town, which provided the Farbri-Form facility with water and sewer service.
In July, Fabri-Form merged with Penda Corporation, which makes bedliners for pickup trucks. The new entity is headquartered in New Concord.
