Kimbolton man sentenced for killing teen

Thomas Nugent to serve six years behind bars

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- A Kimbolton man has been sentenced in connection with a crash that killed one teenager and injured another north of Cambridge in April of this year.
In a emotionally charged sentencing, 29-year-old Thomas D. Nugent was ordered to serve to six years behind bars by Judge David A. Ellwood in Guernsey County Common Pleas Court on Friday.  Nugent was given three years for leaving the scene of an accident and three years for tampering with evidence.   The victim's family read a heartwrenching statement to both the judge and defendant before sentencing, that had many in the courtroom in tears.
According to reports, two teenagers were seriously injured just after midnight on April 13th when Nugent struck a riding lawn mower being towed by a four-wheeler on Old 21 Road. One juvenile, 14-year-old Brandon Pethtel, died later that day as a result of his injuries. Neither the ATV nor the lawn mower had lights, or were licensed to be on the highway.  Nugent fled the scene of the accident, but was arrested the next day, thanks to a tip from a concerned citizen. His damaged vehicle was located in a barn not far from where the crash occurred, near the intersection of Old 21 Road and State Route 541.
