Bridgeport School District missing over $80,000

Authorities speculate that an outside hacker is to blame

BRIDGEPORT, Ohio (AP) - More than $80,000 is missing from a school district in Belmont County, and the superintendent says he believes a hacker is responsible.
Media outlets report the FBI is investigating the possible theft from the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District in Belmont County. The investigation began last week when district officials received a call alerting them that the district's bank account was overdrawn. Employees were warned this week that the computer system may have been compromised.
Authorities and school district officials say this was not an inside job and that all evidence points to an outsider who is not local.
Superintendent Ted Downing says the district can continue to operate without any setbacks, and added that the district is prepared to take legal action.
