Ohio Traffic Fatalities Down In 2013

State is expected to have fewer than 1,000 traffic deaths this year

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Newly released statistics show Ohio saw a big jump in traffic fatalities last year - but officials say the numbers are back down in 2013.
Numbers released Thursday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that Ohio had one of the largest year-to-year jumps in fatalities in the nation in 2012.
Lt. Anne Ralston, the State Highway Patrol spokeswoman, tells The Columbus Dispatch that part of the increase can be blamed on unseasonably warm weather that got more motorcycles on the road earlier in the year.
In all, 1,123 people died in Ohio wrecks last year - an increase of 106 from 2011.
But this year the state is expected to have fewer than 1,000 traffic deaths. As of Thursday, there have been 836 fatal crashes statewide.
