Cambridge City Council met in regular session Monday

Alley vacation policy still a contentious issue, vote shows

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- A busy night for Cambridge City Council, as Monday night's agenda contained a number of items carried over from their last meeting.

Council approved vacating an alley in the Matthew's Addition, but not as easily as some expected. The issue, it's third and final reading Monday night, was narrowly approved by a 4-3 margin. One of those dissenting votes came from Councilman Tom Snyder, who prior to the vote, said he was voting no as a part of his concern over the city's procedure on vacating an alley. This is not the first time such concerns have come to light.
Earlier this month, the Legislative Committee tabled discussion on declaring a moratorium on alley vacations allowing Law Director WilliamFerguson time to compile requested information.
The alley in question is adjacent to Gomber Ave, between Clark St and Highland Ave.

A second alley vacation also appeared on Monday night's agenda, this in Tingle's Addition. The alley in question runs behind the 1st United Presbyterian Church on Steubenville Ave, which was destroyed in the June wind storm last year. This ordinance was given second reading, and will go up for a vote in two weeks.
In other Council matters, two ordinances of transfers and appropriations were approved. One set of transfers was left over from two weeks ago when Council did not have enough members present for a vote. The various transfers are primarily routine, end-of-the-year transactions, as the city balances out their books as the year comes to a close.

Council Monday night unanimously approved a request by the Secret Santa organization to solicit funds over the next few weeks. The curbside fund raising events will take place on November 29th, December 7th and December 14th from 10 a.m to 2 p.m, at the intersection of Wheeling Avenue and Southgate Parkway.
Also approved was a request by the Cambridge FD to apply for an Assistance to Firefighters grant. If awarded, the funds will go to the purchase of a new ladder truck, replacing the current 1982 Pierce, 105 foot tower truck.
