CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- A Lore City man, who turned himself in for a reported theft, has now been charged after allegedly smuggling drugs into the Guernsey County Jail.
Twenty-three-year-old Shane T. Smith, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, showed up at the Law Enforcement Center and reportedly handed deputies a prescription pad he said he had stolen from a doctor's office in Dover on Wednesday. Smith was questioned and then placed into a holding cell, where corrections officers noticed he was acting suspiciously. Jailers allegedly found that Smith was under the influence of some prescription pill he had smuggled into the jail in a body cavity. Once discovered, Smith reportedly attempted to place the pills back into his orifice. Detectives say that Corrections Officers removed the pills from Smith and informed deputies.
According to Det. Sam Williams, the suspect was charged Friday morning with illegal conveyance of a controlled substance into a corrections facility. Two additional charges - tampering with evidence and illegal possession of drug document - will be presented to the Guernsey County Grand Jury for consideration. Smith remains in custody in the Guernsey County Jail.
