BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- A Belmont County man accused of fatally suffocating a toddler last year changed his plea on Friday.
Court records indicate that 28-year-old Ian Jarrell of Bridgeport pleaded guilty to amended charges of felony child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter when he appeared before Judge John Solovan. Prosecutors said Jarrell's previous counts of child endangerment of various degrees duplicated one other, and urged the court to amend them to one felony charge.
Jarrell was convicted for his role in the death of 2-year-old Matthew Caprita, who was found dead on Oct. 1, 2013 at a Bellaire home. Jarrell was babysitting Caprita for his girlfriend, the child's mother, at the time of the boy's death.
Jarrell could face up-to 19 years in prison for both felony charges. He will be sentenced on June 6.
