CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- An anti-abortion, pro-gun rights Democrat has won her primary in a bid to unseat two-time U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson.
Former state Rep. Jennifer Garrison of Marietta defeated Democratic primary challenger Gregory Howard, a farmer and community activist. She will now face Johnson, who was unopposed in the GOP primary, for the seat in Ohio's Sixth Congressional District.
Garrison has the backing of national Democrats in our Appalachian coal region in southeastern Ohio. The seat is viewed by both parties as competitive this fall, having once been working-class Democratic turf.
The primary was notable for what Garrison stayed away from: President Barack Obama. Garrison says that Obama's policies won't help her win.
