Residents return after chemical plant evacuation
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Residents were able to return to their homes after officials lifted an evacuation order around a Columbus plant amid concerns of a possible explosion caused by chemicals being mixed together.
According to WBNS-TV, hazardous material crews were called to the AkzoNobel Coatings Inc. plant in north Columbus shortly after 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Tracy Smith says that unknown chemicals were mixed together, leading to the explosion possibility. Residents were able to return to their homes around 9:30 p.m.
Fire officials say people who live within a half-mile radius of the plant were evacuated. The plant was also evacuated.
AkzoNobel is a Netherlands-based paints and coatings company that produces specialty chemicals.
