ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- Authorities say that two men who drowned in the Muskingum River late last month were likely intoxicated when they crashed a stolen boat and fell into the water.
Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said investigators have spoken to several witnesses who observed two men piloting a blue-and-white open bow vessel in a reckless manner on June 24. That's the day that 35-year-old Travis Krouskoupf and 24-year-old Kenny Tucker, both of Zanesville, are believed to have drowned after driving the stolen boat over a dam.
In addition, Sheriff Lutz said the owner of a 60-foot houseboat docked nearby reported that his boat was broken into and that several alcoholic beverages were stolen from the refrigerator.
Lutz says both Krouskoupf and Tucker did have criminal records. He described the incident as an unfortunate event that could have been prevented.
Search parties recovered the bodies of Krouskoupf and Tucker from the Muskingum River after four days of searching.
Sheriff Lutz said an investigation is ongoing.
