Commander John McFarland, head of the Belmont County Drug Task Force, told AVC News that his officers, along with agents of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, uncovered a 71-pot meth lab at a vacant property on High Ridge Road, just off of State Route 214, early Monday morning. Comm. McFarland said that the information they had gathered did not prepare them for the scope of the activity:
McFarland said that an outside contractor had to be called in to assist in the clean-up effort, as the Task Force did not have enough equipment to ensure it could be done safely.
In 2013, the Belmont County Drug Task Force uncovered and contained 12 meth labs. McFarland said the Task Force has already busted that many this year.
No arrests have yet been made in connection with Monday morning's operation. An investigation is ongoing.
