Belmont County EMA Director Dave Ivan said that a woman cleaning out a barn on Main Street in Armstrong Mills discovered the explosives on Tuesday morning, and immediately contacted the local fire department. Everyone living within 1,000 feet of the barn was evacuated, and parts of State Routes 9 and 148 were closed.
Ivan said that the Columbus Fire Bomb Squad was called in to disarm the unstable explosives. Experts on the scene said that the old dynamite had crystallized, causing it to be extremely susceptible to combustion. At last report, the bomb squad planned to douse the dynamite in diesel fuel, which would neutralize it, and then burn down the barn.
Those evacuated from their homes were transported to the Senior Citizens' Center in Centerville. They remained there until around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Ivan said the box appears to have been in the barn for a long time, and was most likely simply being stored there.
