At the urging of a Steubenville resident, Councilman-at-Large Kenneth Davis drafted a statement about Ma'Lik Richmond returning to the football team now that he has served his sentence. Davis said he came to a decision after consulting with his fellow council members, and invoked his faith in encouraging forgiveness: "This is not the decision for this council or administration, but as a lifelong Catholic and what I consider myself as a pretty good Christian guy, I ask all of you that are against this to think of your reaction."
Davis echoed the sentiment of Big Red Coach Reno Saccoccia, who said Richmond has done exactly what the court has asked, and should be put in a structured environment so that he can try to improve his life.
Richmond was found delinquent last year of raping a West Virginia girl in connection with a case that drew national attention and ire. He must register as a Tier II sex offender every 180 days for 20 years.
