Belmont County has third-most permits, home to third-best producing well

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- After a slow month in July, horizontal well permitting activity has started to pick up again in several counties in our listening area.

The latest data from the ODNR's Division of Resources Management shows that Guernsey County has seen eight new permits so far this month, bringing the county's total to 136. Belmont County, which has the third-most permits in the state, saw seven new permits since August 1, for a total of 146. Belmont County is also home to the third-highest producing gas well in the state.

Meanwhile, Noble and Monroe counties have seen no new permitting activities this month. Noble County has 111 permits, while Monroe County has 105. Monroe County is host to the first- and second-highest producing gas wells in Ohio.

Carroll County continues to lead the state, with 427 permits. Harrison County remains second, with 261 permits.

Since December 2009, the ODNR has issued 1,446 horizontal drilling permits in Ohio's Utica Shale. Of those, 1,025 have been drilled, while 547 wells are producing.
