The Zane name is deeply woven into the history of this scenic county. In addition to the famous author who was to come later and carry the Zane name as his first, there are his ancestors, including Ebenezer Zane, the blazer of the Zane Trace, which opened up this part of the state to settlers. There was also Ebenezer's brother, Jonathan, who, along with son-in-law John McIntire, founded the town of Zanesville. At one time, Zanesville was selected as the state capital, but a mighty earthquake during the first legislative session caused the lawmakers to flee. Thus, Zanesville was saved from a human calamity by a natural one. Zane Grey was born in 1875 in Zanesville, and used the exploits of his ancestors as story lines for several of his novels. ATTRACTIONS THE NATIONAL ROAD / ZANE GREY MUSEUM commemorates both the National Road, the first national highway to be authorized by Congress in 1806, and the famous author from Zanesville. THE ZANESVILE ART CENTER features painting, photography, and drawings from Europe, the Orient, and America. DILLON STATE PARK is known for overnight camping and outstanding wildlife and bird watching opportunities. BLUE ROCK STATE PARK is found near Zanesville. One of the most abundant residents is the beaver, which inhabits the meandering forest brook. EVENTS THE MUSKINGUM COUNTY FAIR is held in mid-August at the fairgrounds in Zanesville. |
